Homeless Tails Special Reports

"Homeless Tails" producer Sandy Levine has enhanced the educational component of the program by creating a series of special reports on a variety of animal-related topics. These reports go beyond the adoption of individual animals accomplished through the studio show, to educating viewers about important animal welfare issues.

Golden Retriever RescueGolden Retriever Rescue

With his loyal nature, good looks and friendly disposition, the Golden Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in this country...probably not the dog that comes to mind when you think of homeless pets. In fact all breeds of dogs are given up for various reasons; goldens are no exception.

Watch this Homeless Tails Special Report to see how Shore Hearts Golden Retriever Rescue is helping these beautiful dogs, some of whom have been rescued from so-called puppy mills, breeding facilities where animal welfare advocates say the dogs live miserable lives.

Beagle RescueBeagle Rescue

Beagles make wonderful family pets, but the breed does have its own special needs. Beagles are known to be barkers and sometimes they are more challenging to train than other dogs. They are scent hounds that will take off to follow the trail of a rabbit or squirrel. Volunteers with Penny Angel's Beagle Rescue in South Jersey have helped hundreds of unwanted beagles find new homes. This summer Walt Disney Pictures released Underdog, an update of the 1960s cartoon featuring a Super Hero beagle who flies, talks and saves the day. Rescue volunteers hope the film won't prompt people to get a beagle on impulse, without researching the breed first.

Visit Penny Angel's Beagle Rescue's Web site to learn more about adopting, fostering, volunteering and donating.

Shelter OvercrowdingShelter Overcrowding

Too many unwanted pets and too little space is a problem just about every shelter faces, and each organization has to decide how to handle this difficult dilemma. For millions of pets around the country it becomes a matter of life and death.
The leaders of the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown decided to work towards ending the practice of euthanizing adoptable pets for space....The result is a shelter bursting at the seams.
Watch this Homeless Tails special report to see how overcrowding stresses the people who work in shelters and the pets who live there, and find out what you can do to help.

How You Can Help

Volunteering at your local animal shelter and donating money or supplies are great ways to make a real difference in the lives of homeless animals. Visit these Web sites for more information about how children and adults can become part of the solution.

At the annual Super Pet Expo shoppers find gourmet treats, clothes for pets, even bling--evidence of how pets have become pampered members of the family. Attendees also learn about the less glamorous side of pets' lives from rescue volunteers who talk about the millions of homeless animals across the country, and the importance of doing research before acquiring a pet.

Watch this Homeless Tails Special Report to meet some of the "haves" and "have nots", mixing it up at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison.

Camden Animal ControlCamden Animal Control
Have you ever wondered what it's like to be an animal control officer? We traveled to Camden to follow two ACOs who are using some far-reaching city ordinances to help Camden's animals. In recent decades the city has struggled to deal with large numbers of stray animals and some horrific cases of animal abuse. Animal Control Officers Steve Bordi and Chris McGarry say they're seeing signs of improvement while enforcing Camden's no-breeding and no-chaining ordinances. Visit these links for more information:

Petfinder.com Celebrates 10th Birthday
This is an amazing story about how following your dreams can produce miraculous results. Petfinder.com started as a New Jersey couple's New Year's Eve resolution to do something to help homeless animals. Today millions of people visit the Web site each month where more than 200,000 adoptable pets are showcased from around the nation and beyond. Visitors to Petfinder.com type in what kind of pet they're looking for, and their zip code, and the site returns a list of pets waiting for new homes. Shelters and rescue groups say Petfinder.com is literally a lifesaver, enabling them to post available pets to the masses for free....exposure that often results in successful adoptions.

Pet Safety in Warm WeatherPet Safety in Warm Weather
We've experienced some days of extremely high heat and humidity this summer....If you think it's hot, imagine running around wearing a fur coat! Every year pets suffer from heat exhaustion and even die from heat stroke because their owners aren't aware of how dangerous too much activity is for pets during hot and humid weather. And despite all the warnings, people still leave pets unattended in parked cars, which quickly can become a deathtrap, even when it's only 80 degrees outside. Watch this Homeless Tails Special Report to learn more about keeping your pets safe during the warm weather.
