African Sojourn started when Sandy Levine's sister, artist Diana Madaras of Tucson, had a chance meeting with the owner of a tour company that specializes in trips to Africa. Madaras had always dreamed of going on a photographic safari. Terry von Guilleaume, owner of Destination Southern Africa said he would send Madaras on a free safari, if she would agree to donate the proceeds of the original paintings she created as a result of the trip to charity. Thus began a heartwarming "pay-it-forward" story, with one generous act leading to another.

When Levine heard about the fundraiser she was inspired to become involved, and traveled to South Africa to create a moving video about the charities that will benefit from the African Sojourn art show.

The charities include:

  • SanWild, wildlife rehabilitation center, where injured and orphaned African animals are rescued, rehabilitated and returned to the wild.
  • Holy Family Care Centre, an AIDS Orphanage founded by Catholic nuns, to help children whose families have been devastated by AIDS.
  • Malebalong Primary School Community Garden. In the impoverished village of Bismarck, with an 80% unemployment rate, fresh fruits and vegetables are beyond the reach of many families. A huge garden has been planted so the school children will have healthier meals.
  • Reid Park Zoo in Tucson
  • Therapeutic Riding of Tucson, where people with special needs are helped through equine therapy programs.
