Fitness Friday – Copeland Middle School physical education teachers in Rockaway run a mini training camp for kids called “Fitness Friday.” The students scale hills, navigate lateral steps-ups, lift road cones for arm endurance, jump rope and jog around a track.
Day for Darfur – Darfur is no longer just a civics lesson for the 8th and 9th grade students at Pineland Regional Junior High School in Tuckerton. After meeting Dr. Jerry Ehrlich, a member of Doctors without Borders, the students were moved by the atrocities at the refugee camps enough to raise awareness and money by staging a walk-a-thon. After watching a film “Never Again: From the Holocaust to the Sudan,” a holocaust survivor discuss with the students the similarities between the Holocaust and Sudan.
Jellybean Conspiracy – Southern Regional High School students in Manahawkin perform “The Jellybean Conspiracy”. This show combines performances by advanced acting students and students with special needs. Students of all physical, emotional, and academic levels work together to bring this show to life. The advanced improvisational acting class works with self-contained students, autistic students and other special education students. The show gives a voice to those who understand what it’s like to be left out.
Camden’s Own – Jamal Dickerson is a devoted teacher in one of the most challenging places to work in New Jersey. Jamal works at the Creative and Performing Arts High School in Camden. His love of music is only matched by his devotion to his students and his community. Jamal has been recognized nationally with a Milken Award, and has earned a reputation as a great teacher, friend, and devoted member of his community and family.
