Show #14 Make America Work – Making America Work is the motto of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School located at Piscataway. Joseph Gess teaches welding and inspires students to create art out of metal.

WITS – Walter Stillman Elementary School in Tenafly has a unique after school club called WITS (World Improvement by Tenafly Students). Students from third to fifth grade take social activism to a new level. The club’s philosophy is to go beyond the bake sale. They do raise money for organizations, but they also research the issues, educate the public, take action and influence legislation. Issues they have focused on include global warming, landmine removal, peace action, fair trade and hunger.

Fire Safety – Teachers from Monument Elementary School in Trenton team up with Trenton firemen to teach children about fire safety.  From what to do if there is a fire in your house to making plans with your family in case of a fire, the firemen share tips with urban children on how to stay safe.

Academy of Teaching & Learning – The Academy of Teaching and Learning is a teacher lead, teacher directed organization that facilitates professional learning through free online resources and interactive meetings. The Cumberland County Academy winter meeting focuses on data analysis which allows teachers to use data to drive instruction. This allows teachers to target student weaknesses to improve learning success. Cumberland is one of six counties operating such academies, which are funded by a grant from the Dodge Foundation.
