Show #12Tech Showcase – A highlight of the 2008 NJEA Convention was the Technology Integration Showcase, which promotes 21st Century technology tools for public schools. Teachers Kevin Jarrett from Northfield Community School and John Kline from Norwood Elementary School demonstrate the tools they use in their schools. Verizon exhibits an exciting new educational tool called Thinkfinity.  To learn more, go to thinkfinity.org.

The Actor and the Astronaut – Another highlight of the 2008 NJEA Convention was a keynote address by actor and public school activist Cynthia Nixon. She shares her passion and support for public schools.  Also during the convention, NJEA honors one of the first men to walk on the moon, Buzz Aldrin, with an Award for Excellence.

Family Night - “How I Became a Pirate” is the theme of a Family Literacy Night at Charles Harker Elementary School in Woolwich Township.  The evening begins with reading the book about a pirate. The parents and their children go from station to station learning activities that focus on literacy skills. This teaches the child literacy development and also helps the parents discover ideas to use at home.

Listening and Learning – The Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic’s Unit works with nearly 500 New Jersey schools, especially underfunded urban schools. Franklin Elementary School in Trenton benefits from this service supported by volunteers who record books for children with learning and reading challenges.
