MetEast – An experimental high school in Camden is a “Big Picture School” backed by the Gates Foundation that sends students to internships two days a week. Competing for entrance through a lottery, the students at MetEast intern in a variety of locations – from mortuaries to hospitals.
Celebrate NJ – All fourth graders are required to learn about the state of New Jersey. Students at Bertrand F. Gibbs Elementary in New Milford receive extra help on this topic from a non-profit organization called Celebrate NJ! The mission is to create a statewide awareness and pride in things New Jersey. Journey to Andalusia – Combining cultural lessons with the public library is the goal of Saalik Cuevas, a fifth grade teacher at Rand Environmental Magnet School in Montclair. The children will journey to Andalusia through the gifts of music, literature and dance.
Math Out of the Box – Students at Lawrenceville Elementary and Intermediate schools in Lawrence are learning “Math Out of the Box”, which is an inquiry-based math program developed by Clemson University. The teachers in Lawrence Township schools are receiving professional development training in algebra, geometry and measurement. Educational Testing Service observes classrooms and collects student data to make sure the program meets the needs of the students.
