No Name Calling – As part of No Name Calling Week, a team of teachers in a sixth grade language arts class at Havland Avenue Elementary School in Audubon use the book The Misfits to deal with issues involving bullying, tolerance and acceptance. The students participate in a literacy circle and do various activities to promote acceptance
Dynamic Circle – Springfield Township Elementary School in Jobstown is participating in a Dynamic Circle, which stands for Developing Youth – Nurturing Attitudes, Managing Individual Conduct – Citizens Integrating Responsibility, Cooperation, Learning, and Empowerment. The goal of this district-wide, multi-faceted character education program is to improve communications and interaction skills while advancing peace and eradicating bullying, harassment, and violence. This program is funded through the NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education.
Holocaust Study Tour – New Milford High School students learn about the Holocaust first hand - by traveling to Germany, Czech Republic and Poland. The students participate in a Holocaust Day of Learning, which features a tour exhibit and a book of reflections.
Teacher of the Year – Robert Goodman, a teacher at Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro, is New Jersey’s Teacher of the Year for 2005-06. Goodman came from boardrooms in the corporate world to the classroom, where he has dedicated his career to popularizing the subject of physics.
