Space
Talkers - Last May students at Lounsberry Hollow
Middle School communicated by Amateur Radio with astronauts
on the International Space Station. As a follow up to
that exciting event, those students met Astronaut Garrett
Reisman during a special assembly. Reisman, a graduate
from Parsippany High School, enjoys returning to his
native state to share his love of space.
Mooncake
- First and second graders at Carteret and Franklin
schools in Bloomfield are learning about space, the
environment and literature. Based on the book Mooncake,
the project involves a trip to the local park to learn
about changes caused by the seasons. The students will
also meet Ron Ernst from NASA during a special assembly.
Educator Astronaut - Astronaut
Leland Melvin, a former pro football player, explains
how New Jersey teachers can become astronauts. He is
promoting the Educator Astronaut Program which selects
teachers to become Mission Specialists. Teachers will
be trained for spacewalks, to operate the shuttle's
robotic arm, and lead research experiments. For more
information, go to http://education.nasa.gov/.
Gender
Equity - Female students from Loring-Flemming Elementary
School in Blackwood participated in a project designed
to meet the learning styles of female students. Through
a study of math and technology, the girls created a
specialty gift company that produces and markets personalized
items, such as mouse pads and tote bags. The program
is funded through a grant from the NJEA Frederick L.
Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education.
