Poetry
Festival - Students often compete in sporting events,
but imagine urban students competing in a poetry festival.
Each year Sally Hughes, a published poet and school
secretary at the Edison House at Elizabeth High School,
coordinates a poetry festival, thanks to a Pride Grant
from the Elizabeth Education Association.
Blueberry
Legislation - Students at Veterans Memorial Elementary
School in Brick participated in New Jersey's political
process by successfully passing a bill to make blueberries
the official state fruit. They did their research, lobbied
and learned that citizens can make a difference when
they know how.
Math
is Sweet - All students, including special education
students, face the pressures of state-required tests.
Students at Emma C. Attales School in Absecon prepared
for the math portion of the GEPA by designing and building
a gingerbread house. This is a fun way to learn how
to use a calculator and conquer complicated word problems
skills. The program is funded through a grant from the
NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in
Education.
On Your Marks - Lisa Funari Willever
and Lisa Battinelli relied on their experience as classroom
teachers to write a helpful and witty book for first-year
teachers. For more information, go to www.franklinmasonpress.com/.
