Terrie Williams had attained enormous success in the public relations world. Her pubicity firm represented an A-list clientele which included entertainers, athletes, and politicians. But despite her success, Williams found her self living in quiet despair as she battled depression.
On this compelling edition of Another View, Terrie Williams speaks openly about her depression and her new book Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting. According to Williams, a licensed social worker by training, emotional pain and depression are an epidemic in the African American community. In addition to writing the book which also includes comments and personal stories from celebrities who have struggled with depression, Williams has also created the Stay Strong Foundation, which reaches out to people of all ages suffering from mental illness.
As Terrie Williams explains to Another View Executive Producer Linda L. Coles, “My dream is that Black Pain will begin to undo the stigma of 'craziness' Black people often link with depression, that it will give us the space to talk honestly about depression in all its faces and that it will inspire us to celebrate our stories and our achievements even as we do battle.”
Studio guests include Laverne Williams, a social worker and outreach coordinator for the New Jersey Mental Health Association, and Howard Stevenson, an associate professor and chair of the applied psychology and human development division at the graduate school of education at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Playing With Anger: Teaching Coping Skills To African American Boys Through Athletics and Culture.
