Wosene Worke Kosrof
The paintings of Wosene Worke Kosrof have been likened to visual jazz. They have a strong sense of motion and rhythm, and there's even a kind of musical notation: threaded throughout the abstract shapes and hot colors are words and symbols from the ancient Amharic language–the national language of Ethiopia, where Wosene was born. An exhibition of his recent work, "My Ethiopia", is on view at the Newark Museum.

Joseph Flummerfelt
Joseph Flummerfelt has prepared generations of choral singers to please some of the most famous and demanding orchestral maestros in the world–who take the bows at the podium. Now, on the eve of his retirement after 33 years at the helm of Westminster Choir College, Flummerfelt will take center stage leading Beethoven's demanding "Missa Solemnis" on Saturday, March 27th at the Trenton War Memorial.

Judith Brodsky
Printmaker and Rutgers professor Judith Brodsky turned to
her own family for inspiration in her exhibition titled "Memoir
of an Assimilated Family," on view at the Aljira Center
for Contemporary Art in Newark, through March 31st. Using
old family photographs and anecdotal texts, she summons forth
memories of a very specific world of aspiring Jewish immigrants--and
in doing so, strikes a common chord across ethnic groups and
national borders, as she explore the importance of family,
memories and heritage.

Madonna
To artist Allan Espiritu, the pop star Madonna personifies American
pop culture's obsession with celebrityand slick graphic
design is the way that culture is marketed to the masses. In
his installation at the Stedman Gallery at Rutgers/Camden, he
uses commercial art techniques to comment on the new religion
of celebrity worship.

Lauda
Lauda, South Jersey's only choral chamber group, may be made
up of amateurs, but the aspirations and standards are completely
professional. Led by Artistic Director Charles Walker, who also
teaches at Westminster Choir College, Lauda performs a repertory
that is equally demanding of the audience, ranging from medieval
chant to contemporary music by today's leading composers. Lauda
performs March 14th at Christ Episcopal Church in Woodbury.

Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem
High drama and quiet spirituality run side by side in Giuseppe
Verdi's monumental Requiem. Conductor Mark Shapiro says it's
the tension between operatic theatricality and sacred ritual
that gives this masterpiece its power. Shapiro conducts the
Monmouth Civic Chorus in the Verdi Requiem at the Count Basie
Theater in Red Bank on March 20.

Vince DeMura
Composer Vince DeMura hears music in the spoken word. In collaboration
with Puerto Rican slam poet Willie Perdomo, he's created a jazz
opera that combines poetry, song, dance, rap, history, and Latin-tinged
rhythm. "A Poet in Harlem" will be performed February
27th at the Arts Guild of Rahway.
