Trenton, NJ – The award-winning series Images/Imagenes on NJN Public Television examines the issues, trends, and concerns important to the Latino community and celebrates Latino culture with features on music, dance, and art. This month Images/Imagenes looks at recent headline news – including the Rutgers women’s basketball team’s championship win and the ensuing controversy – to explore how Latinos can help build bridges of understanding between people of different nationalities. Also featured this month is the art, music and dance of Mexico; popular cross-over music that is making it to the charts in both the Spanish and American markets; and a celebration of the life and work of Latin music star Hector Lavoe. According to the latest statistics, one out of three women is a victim of domestic violence. In 2006, 300 women, some of them dressed in white wedding gowns drenched with simulated blood, marched down the streets of New York to heighten awareness of the epidemic of violence hidden behind walls of silence. In this Images/Imagenes special, New York Yankees manager Joe Torre talks about his childhood memories as a gifted athlete with no outlet for the emotional scarring from what he calls “America’s best kept secret.” Expanding on the Joe Torre story, the program examines the dynamics of domestic violence, and features innovative ideas from Verizon Wireless to help the victims of domestic violence in the workplace.

Images/Imagenes: Tribute to Hector Lavoe

One of the greatest vocalists in the history of Latin music, Hector Lavoe is celebrated in this edition of Images/Imagenes. A talented vocalist who gained fame all over the world yet died a troubled young man, Lavoe, known as “El Cantante”, is the subject of an Off-Broadway production and a movie telling the story of his life is currently in production.
Images/Imagenes airs on NJN Thursdays at 6:30 pm and Sundays at 8:00 am. The half-hour program is web cast at njn.net and can be seen on NJN’s JerseyVision and on Time Warner Cable on channel 750 in New York. Closed captioning is provided.
