Edens Lost and Found – Los Angeles: Dream a Different City
From powerful government officials with political muscle to neighborhood champions with big dreams, individuals are at the heart of the urban sustainability movement, which is gaining momentum across America. Together they are transforming American cities by creating more livable urban environments for the people who live and work there. The Eden’s Lost and Found series examines the unique environmental, economic and social issues facing the country’s great cities and the innovative solutions that have helped turn their problems around. In this edition, community-based programs in L.A. are taking on the smog and pollution – campaigning to plant one million trees; working for the return of the steelhead trout in the Los Angeles River; and encouraging mass transit with the building of a light rail. It’s a fight for environmental justice, public health and quality of life – a dream of a different city. For more information, visit Edens Lost and Found.

Edens Lost and Found – Chicago: City of the Big Shoulders
In Chicago, City of the Big Shoulders, skyscrapers stand in what was once a field of wild onions. Today, less than one tenth of one percent of the city’s original prairies still exists. But the city is bringing back its lost wilderness in both large and small ways as public policy and citizen activism drive dynamic change. Hosted by NPR’s Scott Simon, a native son of Chicago, the program looks at how this city has emerged as a leader in urban sustainability – with citizen activists mobilizing to protect and enhance wilderness areas and the city’s waterways, and Mayor Daley a powerful advocate for strategies like green architecture.
