Programs for May on NJN’s Images/Imagenes

STATEWIDE – For more than three decades, Images/Imagenes has examined the critical issues of New Jersey’s Hispanic population. This month features culture and history — from Mariachi music, to theater and fashion — as well as a look at community service and Spanish language print media.
MEXICAN ART, MUSIC & DANCE IN NEW JERSEY
Thursday, May 4 at 6:30 pm; Sunday, May 7 at 8 am
This encore presentation explores the culture and traditions of Mexico just in time for Cinco de Mayo (the Fifth of May), an important holiday that marks the victory of the Mexican army over the French in 1862. The viewer is taken to Oaxaca, Mexico to discover the traditional foods, decorated altars, and, games played in honor of the souls of beloved ancestors during “The Day of the Dead,” celebrated each year on November 1 and 2. Also featured is Mexican music and dance. Arizona’s Youth Mariachi Band, one of the nation’s best young Mariachi bands, made up of students aged 12 to 17, travels from Arizona to Morristown High School in New Jersey to demonstrate the uniqueness and history of the Mariachi. In addition, talented grammar school students from Roosevelt School in New Brunswick, New Jersey, perform the various dances of Mexico.
LATINOS IN THEATER & FASHION
Thursday, May 11 at 6:30 pm; Sunday, May 14 at 8 am
“Yo Soy Latina,” the sensational off-Broadway production comes to New Jersey where Images/Imagenes catches up with its outstanding cast at New Brunswick’s Crossroads Theatre. Also performing are Nicole Ortiz, the 17-year-old who almost made it to the finals of “American Idol,” and Liana Ortiz, the nine-year-old who played the role of the young Chita in the Broadway musical, “Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life.” Next, Latino fashions take the stage as the best Latino designers in the area, including Femenina Resort, unveil their unique collections in a show with lots of Caribbean flavor.
LA CASA DE DON PEDRO
Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 pm; Sunday, May 21 at 8 am
This program showcases a community agency, based in Newark, which has served North Newark and the greater Newark area for more than 30 years. La Casa de Don Pedro is well known for its innovative and comprehensive programs that continue to improve the quality of lives of Latino families. Images/Imagenes pays tribute to this agency that provides homes to the homeless, free day care to the poor and job opportunities for the unemployed.
THE SPANISH LANGUAGE PRINT MEDIA
Thursday, May 25 at 6:30 pm; Sunday, May 28 at 8 am
Their headlines are stories from Latin America to the barrios of the Garden State. Their front pages can be seen on many street corners. These local newspapers carry stories that don’t often appear on the national news but are the backbone of New Jersey’s Latino population. This program takes a look at the Spanish language print media — including Su Guia, Hoy, El Nuevo Coqui, El Diario de Mexico, and Latinos Unidos — on this special edition of Images/Imagenes.
Images/Imagenes can be seen on Thursdays at 6:30 pm and Sundays at 8 am, and is web streamed and archived on the NJN web site at njn.net.
