NJN's Another View Receives
Unity Award in Media
From Lincoln University of Missouri
STATEWIDE – The
52 nd Annual Unity Award in Media in the category of Television:
Politics from Lincoln University of Missouri has been awarded
to NJN's Another View for Fannie
Lou Hamer - Courage and Faith . The half-hour program
looks at the legacy of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer
and her extraordinary life as a member of the Mississippi
Freedom Democratic Party. The Unity Awards in Media recognizes
contributions to continuing standards of excellence in media
through accurate exposure of issues affecting minorities
and disabled persons. Lincoln University is the first historically
African-American university in the nation to create a school
of journalism. According to Ebony Magazine , the university
is the “most truly diverse school in the nation.” Another
View airs the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm
, and the following Wednesday at 11:30 pm .
“Fannie Lou Hamer lived during a time when the presence
of racism was raw and brutal. She saw injustices and took
a stand to make things better. She literally stepped out
on faith, risking her life, challenging ignorance and fear.
Working on this project and documenting her powerful legacy
is clearly one of the proudest and most meaningful experiences
of my professional journey. As executive producer, I am deeply
honored to have received this award. And I share it with
all the talented individuals who worked along with me to
illustrate Fannie Lou Hamer's incredible story of courage
and faith.” says executive producer Linda L. Coles. Giles
R. Wright, director of the Afro-American History Program
at the New Jersey Historical Commission, served as researcher
for the program. Wayne Bryant Jr. was assistant producer
and Tonya Davis was production assistant.
Another View is the longest-running African-American
series in New Jersey . Now in its 18th year, the show's mission
is to produce quality programs that educate, document and empower
the African-American community, reflecting their needs, concerns
and interests. Created in 1987, Another View has remained
the only program in the state dedicated to focusing on New
Jersey 's African-American experience. The show gives
viewers a distinctive voice from an African-American perspective
on an array of topics including the arts, education, culture,
civil rights, politics, community, economic development, housing
discrimination and bridging the digital divide.
