Fall ’04 Children’s Programming on NJN

STATEWIDE – NJN presents a new fall line-up of children’s programming for 2004. Beginning this month, Barney, Clifford’s Puppy Days and Cyberchase will offer new programs. New to NJN are Postcards from Buster and Maya & Miguel both of which are part of the new PBS KIDS GO! block. This two hour slot on weekday afternoons is directed toward kids 6 to 8 years old. All half-hour programs, the KIDS GO! block broadcasts weekdays from 3 pm – 5 pm. A complete schedule of children’s programming is combined with this release. Postcards from Buster is a series spin-off of the popular series Arthur. Buster travels with his father, who is an airline pilot ferrying a Latino rock band, Los Viejeros, on tour around the country and the world. Buster takes along his video camera to send home video postcards to Arthur and his friends and family. The series mixes animation with live-action shooting to present Buster’s point of view, adding a vivid, multicultural portrait of America and the world. Postcards from Buster airs weekdays at 3 pm.
Maya & Miguel is a new animated series that tells the comedic story of Maya Santons, her twin brother Miguel, and their extended family and friends. While the series entertains kids, it also offers subtle lessons in language, the value of bilingualism and the cultural diversity of a changing world. Maya & Miguel airs weekdays at 4 pm.
Returning this season are many kid favorites such as Arthur, a three-time Emmy Award-winning animated series based on Marc Brown's best-selling Arthur adventure books. Arthur and his friends manage to solve their crises with imagination, kindness and a lot of humor. They use effective, age-appropriate problem-solving skills when dealing with theme and events central to children’s lives. The series' main educational goal is to promote literacy. Arthur airs weekdays at noon and 3:30 pm, and Saturday mornings at 8 am.
On Barney, the big purple dinosaur and his young friends share adventures featuring songs, dances and games that make learning fun for children. This season Barney offers more interaction between his dino-pals, Baby Bop and BJ, and “real kids” in the “real world.” Barney airs weekdays at 7:30 am.
The popular program Between the Lions opens up a world of literature and learning for children ages 4 to 7. Each thirty-minute episode centers on a book or other written material that the lions and their friends discover in the library. In addition to its lion family, Between the Lions features an eclectic cast of characters. The program airs weekdays at 1:30 pm.
The Big Comfy Couch is a safe, cozy place for preschoolers to learn about the world around them. This acclaimed, award-winning series shares a child's point of view and provides a playful environment for fun and discovery with characters such as Loonette, the energetic clown, and her doll Molly. The Big Comfy Couch airs weekdays at 2 pm.
Caillou, (pronounced KY-YOO), is the story of a lovable four-year-old who has a unique way of relating to the world. Based on a series of best-selling Canadian children's books, Caillou demonstrates how the first experiences of life can be perceived with wonder and discovery. Caillou airs weekdays at 7 am, 8:30 am and 11 am.
Clifford's Puppy Days are an all-new animated series about Clifford's "puppyhood." Clifford may be the biggest dog that ever was, but he wasn't always that way. As true fans of the colossal, crimson canine know, Clifford was actually the runt of his litter. Clifford the Big Red Dog airs weekdays at 9 am and 2:30 pm except Wednesdays, when Clifford’s Puppy Days is broadcast.
Cyberchase, a new animated adventure series, takes kids ages 8-11 on a wild ride through cyberspace where they are challenged to use the power of math. The daily series stars the voices of Christopher Lloyd and Gilbert Godfried. Cyberchase airs weekdays at 4:30 pm.
Dragon Tales is an animated series for children which chronicles the adventures of six-year-old Emmy and her four-year-old brother, Max, who discover a magic dragon scale in the playroom of their new home. When they hold the scale and chant a poem, they're transported to Dragon Land. Each episode features a situation that Emmy, Max and the dragons confront together. This half-hour program is divided into two 12-minute adventures linked by Dragon Tunes — a music video segment led by the dragons, designed to encourage audience participation. Dragon Tales airs weekdays at 8 am and Saturdays at 8:30 am.
DragonflyTV is all about cool exploration, hot music and, of course, science! Whether you're into summertime ski-jumping, wicked whitewater rafting, searching for aliens or forensic fun, DragonflyTV is packed with hands-on investigations. DragonflyTV airs weekdays at 5:30 pm.
Mister Rogers is a show that speaks to young children in a way that they can understand, at a pace they can absorb and with a consistency that creates a calm, safe place for preschoolers. Topics with sensitive emotional concerns are always carefully blended with fun and whimsy to match a young child's interests and level of understanding. Mister Rogers air weekdays at 11:30 am.
Reading Rainbow, an eight-time Emmy Award-winner, takes young viewers on adventures that stimulate their interest in reading for pleasure and entertainment. The fast-paced, magazine-style format features on-location and up-close views of real life experiences, from gathering honey and tending bee hives to ethnic traditions of families and communities. Reading Rainbow airs weekdays at 10:30 am.
For 35 years, Sesame Street has been consistently honored for its contribution to generations of children’s development and remains the benchmark for the very best in educational programming. Always in tune with what’s going on in the world around us, Sesame Street continues to incorporate today’s pop-culture icons and watercolor subjects into their new storylines. Season 35 features hilarious parodies of hit shows and celebrity puppets. Sesame Street airs weekdays at 9:30 am
Created for kids by kids, Zoom is a new version of the Emmy Award-winning 1970s PBS children's show. The new Zoom features games, plays, science experiments and other activities based on contributions sent in by kids from across the country. Targeted at kids ages 6-12, Zoom combines the irreverent, insightful and playful spirit of the original series with up-to-date technology. Zoom airs weekdays at 5 pm.
