Phyllis Salowe-Kaye joins the New Jersey Public Broadcasting Authority Board

STATEWIDE – In June 2004, Phyllis Salowe-Kaye became a member of the New Jersey

Public Broadcasting Authority Board of Commissioners, after being appointed by Governor James E. McGreevey with the approval of the New Jersey Senate. The Authority operates the statewide system of non-commercial broadcasting stations and is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of the state’s residents through its programming and services.

Salowe-Kaye is executive director of New Jersey Citizen Action, the state’s largest consumer organization. She is responsible for raising funds to support the organization’s budget and supervising its staff of 40.

Active in community affairs, Salowe-Kaye is legislative vice president and a former president of the New Jersey Tenants Organization, and was the co-founder of Shelterforce, a 27-year-old national housing publication. She also serves as a board member and treasurer of H.A.N.D.S., a community-based neighborhood development corporation in Orange and East Orange, New Jersey; and a board member of the National Housing Institute and U.S. Action.

Salowe-Kaye has won numerous awards, including the Leadership Award from the New Jersey Black Ministers Council, the Civil Justice Award from the New Jersey Consumers for Civil Justice, the Service Award from the Housing & Neighborhood Services Inc., the Equal Justice Medal from the Legal Services Corporation of New Jersey, and the Ann Klein Advocate Award from NJ Community Health Law Project.

She is the executive producer of a 14-minute video, “A Home of Her Own,” which follow three women, all first-time homebuyers, through the process of purchasing a home.

Salowe-Kaye graduated from Boston University with a bachelor of science degree and attended the Graduate School of Urban Planning at Rutgers University , New Brunswick , New Jersey . A resident of West Orange , New Jersey , she is married and the mother of two children.
