REDISCOVER THE HIGHLANDS WITH A SPECIAL REBROADCAST
The Highlands Rediscovered
Only On NJN Public Television
Thursday, December 30, at 9:30 pm
STATEWIDE – Rediscover the Highlands once again by tuning into NJN’s highly respected and well-received original documentary about the unexpected wilderness in the northern part of New Jersey. The Highlands Rediscovered airs on Thursday, December 30, at 9:30 pm on NJN Public Television. Besides its exquisite beauty, what makes the Highlands so exceptional? For over a hundred years, the region has been pointed to as northern New Jersey’s best, last hope for clean water – a resource we take for granted – but cannot live without. As a special treat, Touring New Jersey – a Lou Presti documentary – will precede The Highlands Rediscovered at 9 pm.
The Highlands Rediscovered, a half-hour documentary, explores what makes this area special by focusing on the natural history of the Highlands as seen through the eyes of professionals who study and work there. The Highlands safeguards a source of naturally clean water that provides for millions of people in cities and suburbs along the coast. In 2002, a U.S. Forest Service study of the New York-New Jersey Highlands reported in no uncertain terms that accelerating development in this northeastern “green belt” would significantly compromise the Highlands water supply.
Shot in high-definition video with an emphasis on recording the Highlands’ physical attributes, this program is a visually captivating exploration of an underappreciated wilderness surrounded by – and supplying water to – one of the most densely populated areas in the nation. The Highlands Rediscovered was written and produced by Robert Szuter. The associate producer is Dari Mandell; the original music is by Robert Sands; and the documentary is narrated by Laura Novia. Camera work is by Mike Budd, Paul Horvath, Scott Neall and Jeff Reisly.
Touring New Jersey showcases New Jersey's historic, cultural and natural treasures. The program travels from New Jersey's sandy beaches to its mountains; from the Statue of Liberty to the Monmouth Battlefield; from the Cape May Lighthouse to the Delaware Water Gap. Touring New Jersey spans all four seasons and features spectacular panoramic shots taken from a helicopter and a hot-air balloon, giving audiences the chance to see and experience the beauty and pride of New Jersey in a whole new way. The program was funded by the NJ Office of Travel & Tourism.
For more information on the program, interviews with experts in the Highlands, images and other available resources, visit the NJN web site at www.njn.net. Closed captioning has been provided for your convenience. Funding for The Highlands Rediscovered has been made possible by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.
The Highlands Rediscovered and Touring New Jersey are available on DVD and/or VHS for $19.95 each plus shipping. Or purchase a special two-volume set (four hours) of NJN Classics including the two programs above plus The Eye of the Mariner, Bayshore Artists, Spirit of the Bay, Jersey Gold, and Gardens Great and Small for $50 plus shipping.
