Little Scarlett by Walter Mosley
Crime novelist Walter Mosley has gone and done it again. With works translated into twenty-one different languages and nineteen critically acclaimed books, Mosley dazzles readers with yet another killer success. Published in July of 2004, Little Scarlett is the latest addition in the popular Easy Rawlins mystery series. According to Newsday, “Little Scarlett is tightly woven, as propulsive as a bullet, a book that’s almost literally impossible to put down . . . with Little Scarlett, Mosley has effectively opened up a new dimension, weaving murder, race and the conflicting pulls of the streets and of the family into a kind of tapestry illustrating Easy’s inner life.” The novel, set five days after the 1965 Watts riots in Los Angeles, unravels the murder of an African-American woman killed for rescuing a white man from a black mob. Mosley is an active voice in the black community in the ongoing effort for racial equality. On this episode of Another View, he discusses whether or not race will matter in the twenty-first century through the lens of his own life experiences.
