Dorothy Young
Arts patron and philanthropist Dorothy Young of Ocean Grove
has had a remarkable life At 17, Young auditioned for Harry
Houdini and won the role as his on-stage assistant. A short
stretch on Broadway was followed by a tour of the country
with Houdini in 1925 and 1926.
After several other
roles, she wrote two novels (one of which was adapted into
a movie), toured the world as a Latin dancer with her husband
Gilbert Kiamie, and became a prolific and highly acclaimed
landscape and still life painter. At 94 years of age, Dorothy
Young now says her proudest accomplishment was the endowment
she provided for the construction of the Dorothy Young Center
for the Arts at New Jersey's Drew University.
